Safety Messages
From the ECNA
Pedestrian safety and EVs
Some neighbors have expressed concerns about the safety of pedestrians in parking lots and other areas where vehicles are driven slowly. Because hybrid and electric vehicles are almost silent at slow speeds, if pedestrians rely on their ears to determine if there is a moving vehicle nearby, they could be at risk of being struck by one of these quiet cars. Federal law now requires new hybrid and electric vehicles to make a sound at slow speeds as a warning to pedestrians, but the artificial sound may not be immediately recognizable to us as car noise. (You can listen to some examples at https://mashable.com/article/electric-vehicles-noise-sound-requirements.) Older EVs may not have this feature. So please watch carefully for all types of vehicles around you when in a parking lot or street.
Internet Safety Zones
If you are conducting a transaction with a stranger through an online service, such as Craigslist or Facebook, we recommend using the APD Foothills Substation’s Internet Safe Exchange Zone. This zone consists of two parking spaces outlined in green, which are under 24-hour APD camera surveillance. The two parking spaces are located in the Visitor Parking Lot on the north side of the substation at 12800 Lomas Blvd. NE, between Juan Tabo and Tramway. You don’t need to make an appointment or reserve the space. Just plan to meet the other person at the Safe Exchange Zone, and reduce the risk of conducting business with a stranger.
Reporting Illegal Fireworks
As we get into summer, complaints about fireworks become more common in our neighborhood. Unsafe use of fireworks is especially concerning in our current drought conditions. Please report the use of illegal fireworks by calling 311 or completing an online report at https://www.cabq.gov/fire/how-to-report-illegal-fireworks/how-to-report-illegal-fireworks. Keep in mind that ANY use of fireworks, even legal types, is prohibited in the Open Space and in city parks and should be reported immediately. Please remember that the noise from fireworks is particularly stressful for some of our neighbors and for many pets. Let’s all be safe and considerate in how we use fireworks.
More information regarding the City of Albuquerque’s firework ordinance is available at https://www.cabq.gov/fire/safety-information/fireworks-ordinance-safety-tips.
Text Message Fraud
Now that many of us don’t answer calls from unknown phone numbers, scammers are increasingly turning to text messages and emails to steal our information and money. Scammers may offer you free prizes or gift cards. They may warn you about suspicious activity on your account or send you a fake package delivery notification. The AARP Fraud Watch Network has provided a list of warning signs that a message might be fake.
- You haven’t done business with the company or agency that the message claims to be from.
- The message contains emojis, spelling errors, incorrect grammar, or all capital letters.
- It contains a link to a website that isn’t the official website of the company or agency.
- It was sent to multiple numbers or people.
- It was sent during non-business hours, suggesting it was sent from outside the U.S.
- It suggests an urgent situation, such as a warning that your Social Security account is about to be shut down (a real life example that I’ve received two times), designed to make you act without carefully checking out the situation first.
- It asks you to send personal information.
Don’t reply to suspected scam texts, and don’t click on any links in such messages. Do report spam or suspicious texts to your wireless carrier; you can do this by forwarding the message to 7726. Scammers rely on us to panic and make a mistake, so if we take a deep breath and think before we act, we are less likely to be scammed.
